Laughing at myself, because I began reading this book not realizing it was the second in a series, despite the fact that it says "the sequel" right on the cover.This book hit me hard. The main character, Johanna, dealt with the abuse of her corrupt cop husband, and the aftermath of the damage he caused, and the gaslighting that stemmed from it. (Painting her out to be the crazy one, trying to take away the things that mean the most to her, in the case of this character, her children). Having been in a similar situation I was on the edge of my seat, in the middle of a nightmare I could relate to all too well and yet unable to put it down at the same time. (Trigger Warning: If you've been in an abusive situation, it may hit you in a very personal spot, as well.)
Despite everything, Johanna is a strong woman and although the emotions, and even occasional action, felt very intense, she pulled through and survived it all both physically and emotionally which is more than some people can say.
While I absolutely recommend the book (but be smarter than me and grab the first one first!), be warned that it is a very intense story, but also be inspired by how well the main character deals with all the heaps of crap slung at her.

Ica Iova, an award winning author, writes a page turner that needs to become a movie script. You'll fall in love with main character, Johanna, and simply loathe her antagonists. The take charge beauty goes from being a woman scorned to a stand alone hero. What you need to find out is if Johanna gets the happy ending she strives for in "Resilience; The Sequel."
I had no trouble following this book although I didn't read book 1. The characters are well built and likeable enough for you to keep reading. The story plot unfolds at a good pace and is not overly unrealistic. It has a good mix of romance, mystery and crime making it a serious story with lighthearted moments. My favorite part is of course the ending. Really glad I discovered another new author.
I picked up this book before I noticed it was a series and this was the second book, but the author did a great job of catching us up on the drama from the first book where Johanna's dirt bag ex did everything possible to destroy her life and take her children from her. When this book opens we're facing the messy proceedings where Louis (her ex, also a cop) is coming after her with the help of nightmarish, evil compatriots (including his crazy mother). While we catch up and are waiting for a normal trial, we're surprised when Louis shows up dead.
What follows is the story you'd expect in some ways, she's accused, his cop buddies are trying to railroad her, but in all the dark and stormy mess of it all she reaches out to her ex Preston to see if he'll defend her. What was fantastic was the author didn't go for a cop out and have them just be super-in-love from day one. They had to work at it (like real life) and even under the stress of an insane situation their love grows.
I don't want to spoil the story, especially because it's fun to ride the rollercoaster, but know that Ica Iova does a great job of giving you a happily-ever-after ending, and the twist that comes is particularly enjoyable as the bad guys get what is coming to them. Definitely a fun read!

Although this is a used theme, the ending makes it different. Joanna was divorce with two children and an ex-husband, Louis, who was intent on relieving her of her parental rights. In and out of court drumming up irrelevant issues, backed by his crazy mother as he repeatedly attempted to draw from Joanna everything the marriage had not.
An ugly situation just in those efforts however, when Louis was murdered that changed everything for Joanna since she was now the only ‘person of interest’ as far as the police were concerned simply because in anger, she had threatened him. Who really killed Louis though?
Sometimes it seems everybody else does the job the police are supposed to do. In her effort to find the real murderer in order to clear her name, Joanna hired an attorney, the only one she knew who she thought she could trust but feared their past may hamper his desire to help.

Through the divorce, the court appearances, the fears of losing her children and the attempt made to make her seem guilty for Louis’ death Joanna stood strong and bounced back, understanding that sometimes that’s life – she survived, thrived, found her happiness and prepared to move on into the future because sometimes in life, that is the only thing left to do.
